Study Permit

Study in Canada

Canada is recognized worldwide for its high-quality education, multicultural environment, and internationally respected credentials. Most foreign nationals who wish to study in Canada for more than six months will require a study permit.

What Is a Study Permit?

A study permit is a document issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) that authorizes a foreign national to study at an approved Canadian educational institution.

Depending on your nationality, you may also require a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to travel to Canada.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for a study permit, you must generally:

  • Obtain a letter of acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI);

  • Demonstrate sufficient funds to cover tuition, living expenses, and transportation costs;

  • Show that you will comply with the conditions of your study permit;

  • Be admissible to Canada.

Required Documents

The required documentation will vary depending on your circumstances but commonly includes:

  • Passport;

  • Letter of acceptance;

  • Proof of financial support;

  • Civil status documents;

  • Immigration forms and supporting evidence;

  • Additional documents requested by IRCC.

Biometrics, a medical examination, or other supporting documents may also be required.
