Spousal and Family Sponsorship

The spousal and family sponsor program allows spouses and children who wish to be sponsored by their Canadian spouse, partner, or parent to become a permanent resident in Canada and potentially citizens afterward.

You can sponsor certain relatives to come to Canada if you are at least 18 years of age and a:

  • Canadian citizen or

  • Person registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act or

  • Permanent resident of Canada.

And you must be able to:

  • Support them financially

  • Make sure they don’t need social assistance from the government.

Other things you should know about:

  • There are different eligibility criteria for the sponsor and the sponsored person and applications can be done from within Canada or from abroad depending on the situation.

  • If they become permanent residents of Canada, your spouse, partner, or dependent child can live, work or study in Canada.
