Study Permit

Who’s eligible for study permits in Canada?

  • International students accepted by a designated learning institution (DLI) in Canada and holding a Provincial Attestation Letter.

  • In some circumstances, a study permit is not needed.

Besides the letter of acceptance from the designated learning institution, the student must

  • prove to have enough money to pay for

    • tuition fees

    • living expenses

    • return transportation

  • obey the law, have no criminal record and get a police certificate (if required)

  • be in good health and complete a medical exam (if required) and

  • understand the obligation to leave Canada when the study permit expires.

While studying in Canada the student must

  • make progress towards completing the program

  • respect any conditions listed on the study permit and

  • stop studying if the requirements are no longer met.

Other things you should know about:

A study permit is not a travel document and does not grant the right to enter Canada.  Together with the study permit, the student will have to obtain a visitor visa or an electronic travel authorisation (eTA).
